Steps for First Time Marin Buyers

So the time has come to purchase your first piece of Marin real estate. This can be an exciting and yet stressful time for you, so I thought I would put together a list of things to remember as a first time homebuyer. I know you would like to just jump in and begin your home search, but there are certain steps you should take before beginning your search. First and foremost, you need to check your finances and see what kind of home you can afford. Other steps include:

-Make sure to thoroughly research your lender because you will be in business with them for quite some time.

-Obtain a copy of your credit report and rating.

-Be sure to check your finances and even draw up a budget to help you decide on the right mortgage amount that you and your family are comfortable paying each month. As recent history has proven, this is an important piece that will prevent a lot of future hassle and possibly foreclosure. It can be tempting to spend that extra amount on a home, but just make sure to keep your temptation in check and decide on the mortgage payment that is right for you. I just read an article the other day about a family that was approved for and $800,000 loan, but instead of using that full amount to purchase a home, they decided, since they were first time buyers, to buy something in the $500,000 range because they knew they would not have any trouble meeting their payment requirements.

-Make sure to use our site to search through all the home and condo listings in Marin. We have tried to make it very convenient for you to search by breaking up the listings for each area. Just click on the area links to the left to gain instant access to everything that is currently available. During that time, decide on what features are necessary to have in your Marin home and which features you could live without. By searching through all the listings, it can really help you decide and narrow down what you are looking for.

-Choosing a Marin realtor would be the next obvious choice. We would hope you would use us, but if not, make sure to choose one that has a lot of experience and expertise in Marin real estate. One that knows and understands the local market and trends and one that will be on your side when the time comes to negotiate the price. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
