Flooring Options for Your Home in Marin

Here are some more decorating / flooring ideas for your Marin home. These days there are so many different types of flooring that it can make your head spin just trying to decide on the right floor for your house. If you are thinking of doing a wood flooring, then there are different types of popular wood such as pine, maple or oak. However, you may be more inclined to choose a stone flooring, or maybe tiles, vinyl or laminates. Whatever your final choice may be, make sure you explore all your options. In the article below, I will discuss some of the different types of flooring available.

Stone flooring never goes out of style. Options include marble, sandstone, slate, terrazzo, granite and limestone. Marble is the most popular. It is considered to be a "soft tone" and is generally made in Italy and India. It can be incredibly expensive and very heavy, which adds to the cost by making it necessary to hire a professional to install it. On top of that, marble must be well maintained by cleaning and sealing (every year), which once again adds to the escalating cost. Marble is a natural stone and is also biodegradable, so if you are looking for flooring that is environmentally friendly, marble may be for you.

-Sandstone is incredibly durable, classic and is one of the more popular choices of flooring for current homeowners. Like wood flooring, sandstone also will last through the years, but unlike marble, it does not require costly maintenance. It is also a natural stone and offers many different colors and shades.

-Terrazzo flooring, at one time, was only used by the rich, but is now becoming more accessible. It is made up of onyx, granite, marble and glass, which is then embedded in cement, sealed and polished. If you decide on terrazzo it will probably be the only floor you will ever have to purchase.

-Nothing seems to have become more popular in the last several years than granite, mostly due to its popularity in modern kitchens. However, it is also popular as a flooring option too. It still can be expensive, but it offers a quality of elegance unlike some of the other flooring choices. More durable than marble, granite also requires less maintenance than marble.

-Limestone is also one of the more popular flooring choices of today. Very durable and, for the most part, easy to maintain. It must be sealed if it is going to be exposed to moisture, but it is very easy to keep clean.

Wood Floors are timeless and offer many different designs. The look of a nice wood floor is hard to beat and for the most part will go along with any home design. In addition, with proper maintenance, your wood floor will never have to be replaced in your life. Tomorrow I will write about the different types of wood flooring available, plus other types of flooring. Stay tuned.
