Marin County Home Assessment Update

It looks like the numbers are coming in and as of recent, there have been over one thousand Marin County residents who have applied for tax breaks. Marin homeowners are hoping to save some of their money stating that the value on their property has dropped. The deadline to make such a request has been extended to July 2, 2008.

Each request will be evaluated and, as of now, the county assessor expects to ok reductions on approximately two thousand properties. Last fiscal year, the county gave property tax reductions to around five hundred property owners.

Many areas in Marin County, such as Mill Valley, are doing quite well and appear to be on the rebound, but areas like Novato and San Rafael have been hit the hardest. In fact, nearly half of all foreclosures in Marin are coming from Novato, which has some people calling for a complete reasessment of the area.

Properties hit the hardest are homes, or condos that were purchased for under $800,000. These properties are also the prime candidates for reassessment. If you paid less than $800,000 for your home, then your home has more than likely lost value.
