A century ago, when San Franciscans suffered maladies related to their windy and foggy summers, doctors often prescribed a stay at a health resort in San Rafael. Still renowned for its ideal climate, this largest of Marin cities has evolved into the local commercial hub.
Home to growing technology companies like Brøderbund and Autodesk, San Rafael is beginning to generate a renaissance in its downtown business district.
Housing is most affordable here, with many condominiums and older homes in established neighborhoods for under $400,000, as well as larger modern homes at over one million dollars.
Schools are progressive and more accurately reflect the California mix of peoples than the rest of Marin.
Drive time to the City is about an hour.
